2nd Annual BBQ Cook-Off to be Held June 2 & 3 at Community Park

The City of Forney will be hosting the 2nd Annual Forney BBQ Cook-Off at the Spellman Amphitheater and Community Park, 241 S. FM 548, on June 2 and 3. This Lone Star Barbecue Society (LSBS) sanctioned event, will not only benefit the Forney Food Pantry, but also the Sharing the Love Foundation. In addition to benefitting these two charities, all leftover perishables from the judging portion of the event will be donated to the non-profit Genesis Center in Kaufman.

However, this event is more than just BBQ! The City is currently working towards an amazing music line-up that we believe all will enjoy, but we are still in need of local talent. There will be live music throughout Saturday at the Spellman Amphitheater which will culminate with a popular special headlining act, which we will release in the coming weeks. Other activities that will take place throughout the weekend include an all-ages steak cook-off, Texas Corn Hole League Tournament, field-day activities and a special “Movies in the Park” showing of the recently released Disney movie “Moana”.

After last year’s successful BBQ competition, the City reached out to both participants and residents to get feedback on how the City could improve the 2017 BBQ Cook-Off and we are excited to announce a few changes to this year’s event, with the new ‘People’s Choice Award’ and ‘Local’s Only’ BBQ categories. In addition to the same BBQ categories as last year, the ‘People’s Choice Award’ will allow those attending the event to sample and taste participating teams’ BBQ and decide a winner for that category. Event patrons will be able to purchase ‘People’s Choice’ tickets for $10 and will exchange the tickets with participating teams for a sample and then vote on their favorite. Those attending will also be able to purchase BBQ from vendors throughout the weekend. The ‘Local’s Only’ category will be for residents only. We hope this will encourage more novice pit masters to enter the competition. Other categories participants can enter include $20 for the all-ages steak cook-off, $150 for each pit team (one or all meats) and $10 for jackpot pinto beans and cobbler.

“Each year we look for new ways to improve our events without losing focus of the original vision.” said Forney Special Events Coordinator Alexa Beasley. She continued, “We hope these new additions will enhance this year’s event and we look forward to hearing how the improvements are received.”

Registration is currently open for the competition and has a limit for 75 teams this year. The LSBS rules and regulations can be found on the City’s website. It is not necessary to be a LSBS member to compete.

If you would like to participate in the event, but aren’t interested in cooking there are still a number of spots available for both volunteers and judges. A large scale event, such as the BBQ Cook-Off needs volunteers, so we encourage any and all groups to volunteer. In addition to volunteers, there are currently several sponsorship opportunities available, both monetary and in-kind. Those interested in sponsoring or volunteering during the event are asked to contact the Special Events staff at abeasley@cityofforney.org or call 972.564.7329.
