to Experience Lane Closures for Construction

On August 30, construction will begin on a deceleration lane at the SB FM 548 and railroad crossing. This construction will close the southbound right lane at the intersection between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The City has also required contractors to remove all barricades daily after construction is complete. The contractor has also been authorized to work on Saturdays and Sundays during the same working hours. The hope is that with this construction time slot and the removal of the barricades, the hindrance on traffic during peak hours will be kept at a minimum. Construction is expected to last 30 days, weather permitting. Residents should consider taking alternate routes during construction hours. Alternate routes include Chestnut St., Center St., or Elm St. We will continue to keep residents updated through the City’s website and social media sites.

Downtown Loyalty Program

The Downtown Enhancement Project has been underway for several months and is beginning to take shape as residents can now see all of the improvements that will be made throughout the Downtown corridor. Unfortunately, this project at times can have a temporary adverse affect on businesses located within the Historic Downtown Forney District.

To help those businesses in Downtown, the Forney Economic Development Office (FEDC) has established the Downtown Forney Loyalty Card Program. This loyalty program will encourage customers to still visit businesses throughout downtown, rather than be discouraged by construction. The following are details on how to participate in the program:
  • Participating Downtown businesses will have “participating merchant” sticker in window
  • Customers can pick up a Loyalty Card at any participating business
  • Make purchase of any amount, at any store and receive a sticker for loyalty card
  • Collect 10 stickers to complete card
  • Drop off card at any participating business
  • FEDC will hold drawings and contact monthly winners

Once a month, all completed cards will be collected and two winners will be randomly selected, each of whom will receive a $50 gift certificate. There is no limit to the number of cards a single customer may enter and the gift certificates are redeemable at the participating merchant store of the winner’s choice. For more complete information about the program, please visit www.cityofforney.org/downtownloyalty

FEDC Receives Small Business
Support Grant from Governor's Office

The Forney Economic Development Corporation (FEDC) has received a Small Business Service Provider Grant from the Office of Governor Greg Abbott, Department of Economic Development & Tourism. This project is funded in part, by a grant from the Office of the Governor, as funded by the Texas Workforce Commission under the WOIA Dislocated Worker Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Labor.  Funds will be utilized to sponsor a Small Business Digital Marketing Seminar during the month of September.

Warren Ketteman, Executive Director of the FEDC said, “I’m thankful to the Office of the Governor for choosing Forney for this grant and look forward to using these funds to grow Forney’s small business community.  I also want to thank the Trinity Valley Small Business Development Center for partnering with us in this effort.”  The program will be offered September 14, 20 and 27 from 11:30-1:30 at the Best Western Christopher Inn at 752 Pinson Rd., Forney, TX 75126.  Lunch will be provided each week.  Topics to be covered by area digital marketing experts include social media, Google programs, search engine optimization, websites, e-commerce and email marketing.

There is a $25 fee for each participant, payable to the FEDC.  This fee allows access to all four seminars and helps offset the cost of lunch, which is not covered by the grant.  Those interested in participating in the program must call or email the FEDC to register, 972.564.5808 or info@forneytexasedc.org

Forney Fire Department

Firefighters Exam Ladder Truck During Visit

Earlier this month, members from the Forney Fire Department (FFD) visited the Spartan ERV plant to view a 100’ aerial platform truck to see if it met the needs of the department. The Forney City Council recently approved a $2.1 million dollar tax note to fund the purchase of the aerial platform and a 2018 pumper as well. It can take up to 18 months to construct a ladder truck of this magnitude, and the FFD is excited to begin the construction process.

Firefighters Show
Students they Aren’t So Scary

When fully suited up for an emergency call, firefighters can look quite scary and intimidating for some children. We promise we aren’t! In mid-August, Firefighters Hillis and Payne at Station No. 2 had some visitors and spoke with the students about firefighting gear. Visits like is, provide a great opportunity for children to see what firefighters will look like if there is an emergency in their home. The hope is that demonstrations such as this one could easily save a child’s life in a structure fire situation.

Police Department Participates
in Hide and Seek Rock Challenge

A popular activity that is catching on in our area is the “Hide and Seek Rocks” hunt. Recently, the Forney Police Department (FPD) participated in the event by hiding several rocks across the City, hoping residents would find them and bring them to the station for a surprise. The officers had a blast not only hiding and decorating the rocks, but also waiting until their rock was returned. We’d like to thank everyone who participated and encourage everyone to be on the look-out! There are several still out there!

FPOA Delivers Donations
to Those Affected by Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey impacted southern Texas more than anyone could’ve imagined. In early September, the Forney Police Officers Association hosted a ‘Harvey Relief Donation Food/Supply Drive’ to help those who have been affected by the storm. Officers were not only able to collect a trailer full of donated items, but personally deliver the items to the TMPA (Texas Municipal Police Association) Distribution location in Port Neches. We’d like to thank everyone for donating items!

Cooking Oil Recycling

Forney Public Works to Collect Cooking Oil from Residents

Do you love frying cat fish, but aren’t sure what to do with the oil when you are finished? The Forney Public Works Department collects used cooking oil year-round for recycling purposes. To help encourage recycling, residents can receive a free cooking oil funnel at the Public Works Office, 402 N. Bois D’ Arc. This funnel will help transfer oil from pots and pans into disposable plastic containers, which can then be turned in for recycling purposes. For more information, please call 972.564.7339.
