City Releases Goals and Initiatives for Rest of 2018

What is the City planning for the rest of 2018 and in the near future? Downtown expansion? Unique family entertainment? Specialty restaurants? All of that and more can be found in the 2018 City Goals & Initiatives. In late January, City Council and staff attended their annual retreat and came up with some amazing ideas on how they view the immediate future of the City. The recap of the retreat includes information on how the City hopes to expand parks and recreational opportunities, increase commercial growth, modernize transportation and regional connectivity and continue to manage growth. The entire report can be read in an interactive format on the City’s website at

Employees Join Volunteers in Helping "Makeover" Neighbors Home

In late March, a number of employees along with volunteers teamed up to help a neighbor “transform” his property into something that not only everyone can be proud of, but also was within City code. Representatives from a number of City departments including the EDC, Fire, Community Development and Sharing the Love Foundation, teamed up on this project and we couldn’t be prouder of them! We'd also like to thank CWD for collecting all of the debris, at no charge! Thanks to everyone that was involved in the “transformation”!

City Transitions to New Everbridge Notification System

In the last few months, staff has been working to improve our emergency and improve communication regarding City events. In doing so, the City is excited to announce they will be terminating their contract with the BlackBoard Connect Emergency Notification System and enter into an agreement with the more efficient and cost effective Everbridge notification system.

At the time of launch, residents and community members will be able to sign-up for three separate types of notifications within the Everbridge system: Emergency/Severe Weather Alerts, City Events and City News.

  • Emergency/Severe Weather Alerts – will cover all weather alerts and emergency notifications in the City and surrounding area
  • City Events – provide updates on City sponsored events both before, during and after events
  • City News – offer information on City press releases, website updates, news worthy items

How do you sign up? If you were previously signed up for Blackboard Connect, you will be receiving a notification through email or SMS text that your account information has been transitioned to the new notification system. It is at that time you may decide to add or subtract different types of emergency notifications. If you are unsure or haven’t signed up for the service, you may sign up through the main page on the City’s website. This service is not only offered to residents but anyone living within the Kaufman County Emergency Services District #6. For more information or to sign up, please visit www.cityofforney.org/alerts

City Begins Live Streaming City Council Meetings

The City of Forney is now expanding the level of transparency and accessibility to all of its residents, through a new streaming service for it’s City Council meetings. The City has contracted through Dallas-based Swagit Productions to provide hands-free video streaming of all City Council meetings through the City’s website. As of now, only City Council meetings will be available for streaming, but the City is already looking at the possibility of adding more boards and meetings in the future.

“I think this is a great opportunity that will allow all residents to see how local government operates,” said Interim-City Manager Wendle Medford. “Our meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and for a number of residents it may be hard for them to routinely attend meetings. This service will provide the ability to watch past meetings and help those with busy lifestyles.”

Residents will be able to view indexed and archived meetings from the City's website under the “Watch Meetings” tab.

The funds generated from the project will be used towards the beautification of the City Hall entrance in constructing a monument sign and flag poles. Eagle Scout Flag Box

Eagle Scout Project Allows Fire Station to Collect Warn Flags

In late March, local Eagle Scout Adam Polzin and his father Darrell, dropped off Adam’s Eagle Scout project at Central Fire Station, 104 E. Aimee St. For his project, Adam constructed a collection box that will be used to place flags that are either warn or need to be retired. This collection box will provide a place where flags that are no longer usable can be collected with dignity until they are ready to be disposed of properly. The box is in the lobby of Central Fire Station and all are welcome to drop off flags in the box at any time. Fire Chief Rick Townsend was the first to donate a flag this morning when the collection box was placed. The Scout Master will make monthly trips to collect the flags. Thank you so much Adam and Darrell for this wonderful addition to the station!

Gas Grill

Grilling Season is Here, Are you Prepared?

It’s now April and many residents will begin dusting off their grills in preparation for grilling season this weekend. Before you fire up the grill for the first time, there are a few things that you should remember! Check the hose! Considering that your gas grill has been sitting for many months without being used, it would be wise to check and make sure the hose is working properly. It may also be beneficial to your grill is a good deep clean. If you have a gas grill, take out the grates and give everything a good scrub down and don’t forget about the trap! So many people forget that there is a grease trap under their grill and when they clean it out for the first time can get a shock and how dirty it can be. We love to grill at the station, so if you ever see us outside, give us a holler!

Parks and Rec

Bell Park Gets Colorful before Prom Season

Earlier in April, the Parks and Recreation staff spent a couple of days installing colorful flowers and plants throughout Bell Park, in preparation of prom season. If you are wondering why the Park has been void of flowers for the last two years, well staff decided not to plant any while the Downtown Enhancement project was underway. We are excited to again have a lovely, colorful park in Downtown, especially for prom season!

Jack Ingram

Jack Ingram to Headline 3rd Annual BBQ Cook-Off at Community Park

The City of Forney is excited to announce that ‘Jack Ingram’ will be headlining the 2018 BBQ Cook-Off at Community Park, 241 S. FM 548 on June 1 and 2. Throughout a recording career that has spanned more than 20 years, Jack Ingram has maintained a reputation for uncompromising, personally charged song craft and energetic, charismatic performances, earning him prominent stature in a prestigious tradition of iconoclastic singer-songwriters.

In the mid to late 2000’s, is when Ingram became a “name-to-know” among both Country and Texas-Country fans. From 2005 through 2010, Ingram produced 10 top-100 US Country singles and three top-15 singles, including his #1 hit “Wherever You Are” in 2005.

In 2016, Ingram independently released his most recent album, “Midnight Motel”. “It was really important to me at this point in my life to avoid thinking about any commercial decisions about the music,” Ingram explained. “Every night after my kids went to bed, I’d go into my music room and stay there until about three or four, just working out the songs like I did at the beginning of my career. I wanted to bring people into that space with me.”

In coming weeks, the City will also release several additional acts that will be opening for Ingram throughout the second day of the BBQ Cook-off.

There are also several sponsorship opportunities available, both monetary and in-kind. Those interested in sponsoring the event are asked to contact Special Events staff at abeasley@cityofforney.org or call 972.564.7329.

College St. Fence Project

College St. Fence
Project Nears Completion

Earlier in March, contractors began work on the College St. Fence Replacement Project. The project will remove old fencing on the northern side of College St. and replace it with a new dark-stained fence. Barring any weather delay the project should be complete within the next week. From what has been completed so far, the fence looks wonderful and we are pleased with the progress from contractors.

Talk about a small leak!

Sometimes it can be difficult to find a leak, especially off a 6-inch line, but we have some of the best in the business! Earlier this morning, Public Works crews worked at replacing a corporation tap that was leaking from the threads causing a pretty muddy situation. Great job finding and repairing the leak guys!

Redbud Reconstruction
Project Continues with Pipe Relocation

One of our much larger CIP projects from 2018 and 2019 is the reconstruction of Redbud Dr. The reconstruction of Redbud has been in the budget for several years and the City has finally began work on the project. In late 2017, it was determined that before work on the reconstruction portion of the project could begin, Atmos would have to relocate a gas line close to the Heritage Hill and Redbud intersection. We will continue to update residents on the status of the entire project in the coming year.
